Why is video conferencing so hard?

Dear LazyWeb,

Why is Linux to Windows video conferencing so hard? I'm trying to communicate with ndusart and we can't seem to make a go of it. For me under Debian, ekiga seems like the best bet, but the windows port sounds a bit scary and hard to install, considering I'm not there to do it for her. We also tried WengoPhone, which seems very promising, but was crashing a lot for me and although we appeared to be placing calls to each other, no sound or video was heard or seen by either of us.

So, has anyone done this and had success?

Update: I also tried Skype, but the Linux version doesn't appear to do video.

Easy to install and use on windows and debian. It works for me with no hassle at all, and the whole family, even my computer-challenged grandparents can use it to talk to each other.

Unfortunately, it's not (libre) free. But at least it works.
    • Re: skype just works

The Linux vesion doesn't do video, which was the whole point of the exercise.

Windows Messenger 5.1 (not msn messenger) can do SIP and connect to ekiga.net
    • Is that the lastest version? Will it do video as well?
      • If it doesn't Ekiga should also talk to NetMeeting (which is probably still locatable if you look hard enough on the Microsoft web site). That definately does do video.
        • Netmeeting

Yes, netmeeting works on with gnome-meeting/ekiga for video (at least video linux->windows, haven't tried a return stream). You have to use start->run to get it, but it is still shipped with XP. I beleve the executable is named "Config" for some reason, you can google it.

Yes ekiga <-> netmeeting works with video (both way), but I can't have sound.
does it need special codec on the windows side ? (sip:500@ekiga.net works just fine)

Apparently Ekiga and Netmeeting don't have a common audio codec.
Try to install the speex codec for Windows and enable it in Netmeeting.

...or better: make the Windows GSM codec visible for Netmeeting: save the text under as gsm.reg and then double click on it with admin-rights:

OpenH323.or has a nice comparison chart that will help you find a client for Windows that will work with ekiga:
