Adventures in IPv6 Land

The recent IPv6 Conference at Google and the launching of ipv6.google.com (only accessible over IPv6) inspired me to set up a 6to4 tunnel on my WRT54G running OpenWRT. I've been reading about IPv6 for years, but there didn't seem to be much point. Now I've seen the bouncing Google logo and the dancing turtle, and it really wasn't all that difficult. One issue I ran into was the 2.4 kernel that is needed to run on the WRT54G doesn't have a connection tracking for stateful firewall rules, which makes it a pretty poor IPv6 firewall. It's disabled for now, and tomorrow I'll go buy a WRTSL54GS so I can run a 2.6 kernel.

I'm looking forward to the day when IPv6 transit is normal and all these tunnels are unnecessary.

Does openwrt have recent 2.6 kernels as an option? I don't think ddwrt (which I run) does.

Having ipv6.google.com is a huge win, though.

It actually uses 2.6 kernels exclusively, except for the WRT54G where it needs 2.4 for the broadcome driver it uses, it seems.

It looks nice, but it appears to be unsupported by OpenWRT and apparently the wireless card isn't supported by Linux at all yet. Did you get it working?

I'm about to try DD-WRT on it, actually. According to their supported hardware table, it should work, but you have to jump through a hoop for the initial install, and after that it should be all peachy.

If I'm not mistaken, the v1 should be okay, but the v2 might be iffy. It used to be that the v2 was only available in Europe, but that it's now arriving here, so it might be wise to look around and snatch a v1 before they go away, if you think it's an interesting piece of hardware (I'm all about the USB port and hooking up stuff to it, myself!).

Yeah, the asus one has two usb ports, I might see if I can run Debian off a USB drive on it.

I've been wanting to see the dancing Kame for years...
Never did, but it shouldn't be long now... Any day now. ;)
